Farewell Bishop Crowley

This blog has a Rome correspondent!
I heard a bit of news from Rome by email yesterday and it was confirmed today: the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Middlesbrough, England, presented by Bishop John Patrick Crowley, in accordance with canon 401 para. 2 of the Code of Canon Law" "because of illness or some other grave reason"."

Bishop Crowley is 66, bishops are expected to resign at 75.

Under Canon 401 bishops are requested to submit their resignation when they reach the age of 75. Bishop Crowley has been on sick leave since February. (The Chrism Mass was celebrated by Bp Tom Williams, Auxiliary of Liverpool).

While wishing the bishop-emeritus a good recovery, let's all pray that the Holy Father will send a good, solid bishop to Middlesbrough.

It is of course unreasonable to talk in terms of succession when the outgoing Bishops is obviously ill but I can not see an orthodox bishop coming in and it will be just more of the same. Nobody has ever heard of the recent replacements up and down the country so presumably the next one will be another mate of Cormac's from Porstmouth/Liverpool/Westminster or B&A.

aonon.,
I am not unimpressed by some of Cormac's friends. His appointment of some of his auxiliaries seems to have gone pretty well.

Bishop John was a remarkable bishop and pastor and deserves our thanks, respect and prayers - not insinuation and implied calumny. You could learn much from him

Calumny, insinuation; where?
What are you suggesting?

I think an important question is not who will the next Bishop be, but how long will the diocese be vacant! They are probably looking at a minimum of 12 months. So lots of time to speculate on who the new Bishop will be lol
